一位讀者來電郵問，keep house 和 keep the house 有何區別﹖

(1) Keep house即be responsible for the domestic management of a household，意為「料理家務」，例如﹕

He said that he wanted his wife to keep house and not to work in an office.
他表示，他要太太料理家務，而不要去寫字樓上班。

其實，把女傭叫做domestic help，已體現了平等思想，但美國人登廣告招聘housekeeper，就更加好聽，或更加politically correct（政治正確）。另外，在美國入住酒店，maid敲門，客人問是誰，她會說﹕"Housekeeping﹗"（收拾房間）

若知道此類用法，就更易理解keep house的意思。

(2) Keep the house即be stay-at-home，或be home-keeping，意為「懶得出門」，或「深居簡出」，例如﹕

Jack is a man who likes to keep the house.
傑克喜居家中不外出。

從讀者的問題中可看到，某些名詞前加定冠詞the，字義或會大變，例如﹕

at school（返學），at the school（在學校中）﹔
at sea（在航海），at the sea（在海邊）﹔
in red（著紅色衫），in the red（虧損，或負債）﹔
in hospital（住院），in the hospital（在醫院裏工作等）﹔
in secret（私下），in the secret（參與秘密，或陰謀）﹔
with child（懷孕），with the (a) child（帶著小孩）。
